The main goal of this class is to help teach English to parents that speak English as a second language. Parents who are not fluent in English expressed an interest in increasing their English language abilities to the district. Director of Student Services for LUSD, Joe Aldridge, and Dean for the Lake Center of Mendocino College, Steve Hixenbaugh, worked together to establish a partnership to respond to this need.
“This is an awesome opportunity to support the needs in our community and the exciting start of our partnership,” states Aldridge.
LUSD Superintendent Erin Smith-Hagberg adds, “By learning to communicate in English, parents will be better suited to help their children with schoolwork and participate in school activities. It’s our hope that English as a second language parents will take advantage of this free college class.”
This semester long class will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6:00 pm to 8:20 pm, in room 16 at Lakeport Alternative Education. Registration is required and seating is limited. Participants are expected to attend regularly. Registration packets are available at Mendocino College and at the Student Services Office at Lakeport Alternative Education.
Lakeport Alternative Education is located at 100 Lange Street in Lakeport. Please call LUSD at 707-262-3017 for more information.
