Message from Superintendent, Matt Bullard
July 23, 2021
Greetings Lakeport USD Families,
The past eighteen months have been an interesting time for families, students and schools. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we experienced a dramatic shift in instructional models for all students. This sudden shift created stress and anxiety for all stakeholders. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all students, parents, guardians, and staff members who have demonstrated remarkable flexibility and patience since March 2020.
As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, Lakeport Unified School District is planning to provide learning opportunities for all students in an on-campus and in-person model. We understand this decision requires other entities to finalize guidance of our desired learning model, but it is our intent to open the 2021-2022 school year with in-person learning for all students at all grade levels Monday through Friday. We also acknowledge that LUSD has a diverse student population with a variety of family needs. Some families may not feel comfortable with students returning to full-time, in-person instruction; as a result, we will also offer an option for families to choose an independent study alternative.
Everyone at Lakeport Unified School District is eager to kick off the new school year and excited to have students and families back on campus. All school offices will open on Wednesday, July 28th. Below is a brief description of how school will look when we welcome students back on August 11, 2021.
All persons accessing indoor LUSD campus facilities will be required to wear an approved face covering regardless of vaccination status. At this time, face coverings are not required while outside. Students should plan to bring an approved face covering to school each day and all students should expect periods of time during the school day during which a face covering must be worn. In the event that a student forgets a face covering, one will be provided for them.
At the present time, the restriction of six feet of social distancing has been lifted. LUSD will strive to maintain three feet of physical distancing when possible, and encourage the maximum amount of distancing possible in all school buildings.
One of the best strategies to promote health and prevent the spread of viruses is through consistent and thorough hand-washing. All schools will provide students with clear instruction regarding effective hand washing practices and a consistent schedule for students to implement effective hand-washing practices throughout the school day.
Enhanced Cleaning Routines
LUSD is committed to a safe and clean school environment for families, students and staff members. The District will continue with enhanced cleaning practices to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. These enhanced routines will prioritize regularly scheduled cleaning in high-traffic community spaces within our school buildings. Additionally, we will focus on high-touch areas that may pose the greatest risk of spreading COVID-19.
At this time, we anticipate all student activities to be open as planned and scheduled. We are waiting for official word from the California Interscholastic Federation to confirm the mitigation strategies required of each activity. LUSD is looking forward to hosting all school activities during the 2021-2022 school year.
LUSD is presently planning to have in-person instruction for all students (K-12) on a full-time, in-person basis. This means that students would follow the traditional school calendar and attend school five days per week (unless specified otherwise on the calendar).
Independent Study Option
LUSD will offer an independent study option for students. There are a variety of reasons that students and families may elect to access instruction via an independent study model. If you are considering this option or want more information regarding Independent Study requirements and expectations, please contact your student’s school office.
During the 2021-2022 school year, all students will have access to breakfast and lunch at no cost. We are excited to offer breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost and are hopeful that all students and families will participate. Look for more information from the Food Service Department at the Open House.
Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Lakeport Unified School District will host a back-to-school Open House from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All school buildings will be open for students and families to bring in school supplies for the new school year. Teachers will be in attendance to meet and greet students and families. Clear Lake High School counselors will be available to assist students with scheduling issues. Our IT staff will be available to help families with Chromebooks and troubleshoot technology-related issues. Lastly, LUSD will provide an outdoor picnic for all families. Bring your children (and a face covering) and come join the LUSD community to celebrate the kick-off to the 2021-2022 school year.
